SUMMARY:Next Generation Liquefaction Project: Susceptibility\, Triggering\, and Manifestation Models Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The presentation will discuss the concepts of liquefaction susceptibility\, triggering\, and manifestation and describe the NGL project's efforts to define\, distinguish\, and predict each.  Susceptibility is treated as a fundamental material characteristic independent of state/environmental characteristics such as relative density\, effective stress\, and saturation.  Triggering of susceptible soils is treated as a fundamental layer/element behavioral characteristic associated with high pore pressures and consequent reduction of strength and stiffness that is influenced by state/environmental characteristics.  Surface manifestation is treated as a profile behavior characterized by the presence or absence of surface observations\, e.g.\, sand boils and ground cracking\, that have historically been taken to indicate the occurrence or non-occurrence of liquefaction.  In the NGL liquefaction hazard assessment framework\, susceptible soils may or may not trigger and soils that have triggered may or may not produce surface manifestation.  The presentation will describe the NGL database (https://nextgenerationliquefaction.org/)\, which includes greatly expanded case history and laboratory testing data\, NGL’s philosophy and ongoing development of probabilistic models for susceptibility\, triggering\, and surface manifestation\, the relationship of those models to existing legacy models\, and their implementation into probabilistic performance-based frameworks for assessment of the consequences of liquefaction.
